Errors + BLK JKS + Tiny Masters Of Today

"These boys are the perfect formula for success. They're clean, polite, well dressed and make danceable glitch post rock and even have time to charm the crowd in between songs"

It's Thursday and that not-quite-Friday party feeling in the air has caused a struggle for the bar as the crowd for the night's sell out show start bustling in. Compared to the student turnout on Tuesday night, this lot looked like the 'cool' adults that adorn the offices of our creative industries. They have come tonight to see electronic post-rocking Glaswegian boys, Errors, South African BLK JKS and New York's youngest punk rockers, Tiny Masters of Today.
In the theatre, the crowd has taken safety a good few feet away from the stage, which is not a reflection of the modern attitudes towards the youth of today, but merely the curse of the opening act. The room is red with anticipation of the evening's events. The smells of the smoke machine bring nostalgia for school discos as does the entrance of adolescent sibling duo Ivan and Ada, who take their places and strap on instruments, which reveal the actuality of their real life stature. They could be a miniature Sonic Youth, kitted out with ratty hair, skinny jeans, braces and the nonchalant, possibly hormonal, attitude, worthy of their predecessors. Ivan even set down his guitar for the finale and they concluded with a brilliant rendition House of Pain's 'Jump Around', the highlight of the performance. These kids are too cool and 'show up' by far what could be our British equivalent, maybe Lil' Chris?
As BLK JKS take the stage, there is a curiosity amongst the crowd, who are quickly entranced by their complex blend of psychedelic/post-rock/afrobeat sounds and droned echoed vocals. The whole experience merged into one, interrupted occasionally by miscommunications between band members and for applause in humour of saliva falling out of the guitarist's mouth. These guys are obviously very skilled. It is especially possible to lose yourself in this utterly atmospheric music, and although I am not entirely persuaded, I conclude that they are wholly impressive.
Finally, the experience we'd all been waiting for and the excited audience is appeased with introductory music that sounded like the Jurassic Park theme tune. Errors made their heroic entrance and the crowd is not disappointed. With a cheer, the boys in plaid took their places behind their electronic toys and pumped out the first crowd pleaser. On stage, the front three modestly kicked their feet, whilst the drummer showed off with some stick twirling. As I look around me, members of the crowd were dancing in ecstasy, clearly loving it. These boys are the perfect formula for success. They're clean, polite, well dressed and make danceable glitch post rock and even have time to charm the crowd in between songs. In all they made for an easy evening, they're nice boys making nice music that would certainly have presence in a club, but unfortunately, despite their celebration and close connections to Mogwai, I'm not so easily impressed.
