John Akomfrah: Do You Like London?

The seminal filmmaker asks what whether we 'like London' really means.

8 September 2005

From Week 4: 'Anywhere in the World: David Medalla's London'

Seminal filmmaker and founding member of the Black Audio Film Collective, John Akomfrah narrates a mise-en-scene of 1980s London, exploring the tensions and new visions that gave rise to films such as BAFC's Twilight City (1989). The seemingly innocuous and often asked question 'Do you like London?' sparks a theoretical investigation of place, identity and the politics of integration that alights upon a constellation of experiences and influences ranging from altercations with the National Front to the writings of African-American activist W.E.B. DuBois.
