We Fell to Earth

"Looking at this diversity in the crowd was like watching a David Attenborough mating ritual documentary."
Jamie Hall
They came on stinking of attitude, with trendy hair and good shoes. Not for a second interacting with their audience, they were reminiscent of a drunk Van Morrison from 20 years ago. This lack of communication was maintained for the full 60 minutes apart from when Wendy Rae, ex-bassist from The Earthlings, decided it would be valid to tell us, "We're doing good". Thanks Wendy. She was disguised as a 90s techno German lesbian in a nautical jacket, the kind of girl who could kill you with her shameful attitude and sickening East London fringe. Still, it made her ridiculously attractive, making her poor bass playing seem more acceptable. However, when her moaning screams were heard over the clashing noises of her friends, it made my neck hairs stand on end, and as the bass penetrated it made me see her as a prettier, rawer version of Björk, yet sounds like Beth Gibbons of Portishead.
Her gaily-bashing friends were faultless. Richard File of Unkle fame leading the four-piece seemed confident and rightly so. This was their first UK live show and they seemed very tight. This would explain the mystified crowd, lost in their imposing output, who were content to sway transfixed as We Fell to Earth spat drones of noise over their heads until Be Careful What You Wish For and Lights Out (two tunes on their Myspace). These cheered up the balding 40-year old men in their army of leather jackets, trying desperately hard to impress the abundance of pretty young women, as they shifted awkwardly with limited mobility. This was due to probable early arthritis and the stiffness of those new 'vintage' jackets. Looking at this diversity in the crowd was like watching a David Attenborough mating ritual documentary. Witnessing it though was probably the most fun I had all night, except for going home.
However, I can say in fairness that We Fell to Earth were exceptionally accomplished for their debut performance and, by the reaction of the crowd, their EP released on the 28 April looks to sell well. Well done.
